| Lo Spuntino Offers Sips for the Soul by Donna Page A good glass of wine can definitely soothe the soul. Sometimes a sip is all you need. But how much do you really know about wine? If you are looking for a place to gain knowledge about today’s wines, purchase unique wine accessories and surround yourself with like-minded people, stop by Lo Spuntino in Buckhead. Lo Spuntino, which means “a little taste” in Italian, originated in Sonoma, Calif., in 1996. “The company started out as a shipping company,” explains Holly Beach, general manager. “The owners wanted to help push the wines from smaller wineries and make them available to people everywhere.” There are 12 Lo Spuntino locations throughout the country. “The Buckhead location, which is almost five years old, and the Sonoma, Calif., location are very different from the other locations. The other locations are pretty much like glorified warehouses because they can ship wine to their customers,” says Beach. “We can’t because Georgia is a no-shipping state. You can’t courier or ship wines to the state, out of the state or within the state. Since Georgia has such strict shipping laws, the company decided to design a pretty storefront location because our customers have to come in and pick up their wine.” The Buckhead location features an in-store bar and a retail store. They offer wine club memberships, private classes, special events and retail items. The wine club, which has more than 800 members, features wines from the Viansa Winery. This is a prominent winery in the Carneros growing region between the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The $20 Wine 101 class is great if you want to learn the basics about wine, glassware and food pairing. You are treated to live jazz during Vino Hour, which is held every Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can usually sample four to five wines for $10. The retail store offers numerous wine accessories, books, olive oils, imported Italian ceramics and picnic items. The in-store bar houses more than 200 wines and a variety of champagnes, sparkling wines, ports and Sherries. “I e-mail a detailed calendar of events to our members each month. The people who attend our events and classes truly care about wine. Our customers are affluent,” admits Beach. “Our goal is to help educate people about wine and to be the merchant that people trust. I love working with wine, teaching people and my staff about the joys of wine and romanticizing wine the way it should be romanticized.” Lo Spuntino is located at 3005 Peachtree Road in Buckhead.
