| Vegan Way, Fresh Juice Bar and Cafè 1658 LaVista Road Atlanta, GA 30306 (404) 728-4452 Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Samania El, owner and chef, uses her more than 20 years of vegetarian and vegan cooking expertise to bring taste back to vegetables. Wheat grass shots you can find elsewhere pale in comparison to her healing green sea moss drink for which the cafè is best known. The light fare is best for brunch or an early dinner and seating is coveted, with only four indoor tables and two outside. Menu ***1/2 The café specializes in raw, organic and dehydrated specialties alongside some cooked favorites. Vegan Way is highly recommended if you have common food allergies but still crave sandwiches and lighter fare. Prices on the menu range from $2 to $12, but generally expect to spend $5-$7 on each item. Tofu and veggie substitutes are not the only things for gourmet vegetarians. The chef creates raw soups, salads and even a Sunny Surger made from soaked pecans, sprouted buckwheat and flax seeds. Of course, there are pizzas. What restaurant is complete without a Kinder living pizza? The crust is made with flax and pecans, topped with marinated spinach, macadamia cheese (macadamia!) and avocadoes. Food Quality **** El uses only fresh and mostly organic ingredients. Food Presentation *** The presentation here is simple and functional. Meals can be taken on the go or eaten from napkin-covered, basket-weaved plates. Atmosphere **** For a café with lots of people coming in and out all day, the owners do a great job of keeping the atmosphere relaxed and easy. The combination of fresh squeezed vegetables and juices add to the light and airy feeling. Cleanliness **** The small space is perfectly clean with the tables and floors always pristine. Service ***1/2 Vegan Way is a simple place with quiet people, but the owners are happy to tell you about their beliefs in organic and healing foods. Menu recommendations If you miss the taste of meat and want that same feel to your sandwiches, you need to try the veggie supreme burger, $5.50, that comes with vegan cheese and the usual lettuce and tomatoes. The homemade mustard and sun-dried tomato sauce make the sandwich unique. This is also one of the few places in Atlanta where the owners will split a fresh young coconut for you as people do in the Caribbean. You dunk a thick straw in the center and taste a little bit of heaven. Overall rating ***1/2 review by Ashley Wilborn |
