| The Treehouse ~ casual **** 7 Kings Circle NE Atlanta, GA 30305 Phone 404-266-2732 Open since 1986, The Treehouse (www.treehouseatlanta.com) is a neighborhood Shangri-La in Peachtree Hills, just off Peachtree Street, known for casual food and a spectator sport patio under canopied Live Oak trees. General Manager Summer Rose and staff trade drive-by conversation with regulars in this cozy, retro pub, filled with nick-knack attic décor. Discover the six-foot Marlin Mascot and the wooden birdhouse collection filling the walls in carefully cluttered motif. Food rises (from the basement) in a well-coordinated mad dash, as wry conversation permeates the nooks and crannies. MENU: **** Sprawling from English country pub grub to Mediterranean fare, the menu also features southwestern appetizers like Guajillo Shrimp Quesadillas. Any consistent regional theme is refreshingly avoided. Diners may wonder from red beans and rice all the way over to beer battered mushrooms with horseradish dipping sauce. Lisas creamy artichoke dip is beloved by staff and habitual offenders. Yuppie staples such as the urban requisitecalamariaccompany hummus bi tahini, mussels Sambuca and baked Brie. Cold Spicy Buckwheat Soba noodles may lure you toward posh, but lip-smacking chicken wings keep you down to earth. A pizza oven and extensive salad lineup, including a Cobb and Nicoise greens round out the first courses. Regulars live on the burgers au-turf, with real toppings, not sprinkles. There are at least five ways to cry foul with chickenincluding buffalo, jerk and special delivery. Wasabi mayo appears on a sleek salmon sandwich, and the Havana marinated pork tenderloin sandwich with shaved red onions screams for attention. A bit far from Maine, but the popular Lobster Nights, Monday and Tuesday, draw not only lugubrious amounts of butter, but also salty crowds. FOOD QUALITY: **** The pastas are al dente, with varieties of techniques applied toward Northern Italian and new American, a mélange of flavors. Meats are moist, leaning toward succulent, yet not over prepared like so many restaurants that set timers rather than properly eyeball roasting meats. The produce is always crisp. FOOD PRESENTATION: *** Prepare to relax with comfort food, long on proportion, short on pretense. The presentation is in the flavor; fanfare is shunned like the plague. The Fried corn meal catfish served with jalapeno cheddar grit cakes with Cajun remoulade highlight the entrées. Prepare to gawk as eye candy passes by your tables. ATMOSPHERE: **** Parking is hit or miss, depending on how you parallel park, or you could wind up in front of someones yard and risk the tow. But the crowds and jovial smiles peppering food selection make wait times worth it. A requisite singles scenethe pretty peopleaggressively eye each other from the cushy corners and tight woody interior. The whimsical patio is for advanced eye candy. Colorful mismatched lighting brings nightlife into relief. Were just not sure how the neighborsliterally ten feet awaysleep during happier hours. CLEANLINESS: **** The cooks must have to go outside to stretch in this cramped kitchen, but the place is well kept. Despite the cocktail sipping scene, unlike many hangouts, you can confidently sit without running up a dry cleaning bill. SERVICE: **** Comfortably swamped, Waitresses have those You dont scare me faces so necessary to taming well-coiffed thirsty mobs; they handle overflow with grace and excessive drink orders. They also know the menu better than chemists can spout the periodic tableno taking the fifth about favorites or duds here. MENU RECOMMENDATIONS: The BBQ Salmon with honey chipotle BBQ sauce and green rice is right on. The Guiltless Vegetable Linguini with feta, green onion, red peppers, garlic, tomato and white wine is a sin. Dont leave your first time without an order of the almost tempurabeer battered mushrooms. OVERALL RATING: **** The Treehouses charm is its locale. With a feel of a clubhouse aging gracefully, it cant be copied. If youre lucky enough to live close, its a treasure! Show up and stay late with the cheerful crowd in Atlantas sleepy bungalow neighborhood near Midtown. Light or hearty, for sippers or the thirsty among us, this converted building offers consistent nightly fun. review by Cliff Johnson |
