Murphy’s was founded in 1980 and has since been a staple of the Virginia Highland community. It has recently rejuvenated its menu and renovated the front of the restaurant to feature a wine bar and a pastry bar. Murphy’s is a favorite spot for locals as well as a great option for visiting guests. The atmosphere is cute and comfortable – a great place to enjoy a lovely weekend brunch or to linger over delicious homemade pastries.

MENU: ****
The menu offers sandwiches, salads and entrees of all magnitudes. A large brunch menu on the weekends rivals others in town. Don’t miss the spectacular array of unique desserts available.

FOOD QUALITY: ****
Food is prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients and vegetables.

FOOD PRESENTATION: ***
Presentation is simple with basic garnishes. The best-looking items are the pastries.

ATMOSPHERE: ****
Murphy’s is set in an old remodeled house with the room divisions intact. The feel is quaint and casual. On sunny days, lots of light shines in through the windows adding a cheery burst. Near the entrance is an elegant wine bar that gets overshadowed by the crowds waiting to be seated during the weekend brunch rush.

CLEANLINESS: ****
The wine bar in the front of the restaurant is immaculate. Tables in the back are wiped down between customers. Dining out on the patio area is slightly less refined.

SERVICE: **
The wait staff is courteous, but overall, service is unremarkable.

MENU RECOMMENDATIONS:
You can’t go wrong with one of the egg specialties for brunch, such as the Linda’s omelet, which is filled with spinach, onions, mushrooms and cheddar cheese, or the jazzed up southwest frittata, which is made up off eggs, chorizo, potatoes, onions, peppers, pepper jack cheese, crispy tortilla strips and sour cream. All egg specialties are served with your choice of potatoes or grits and a biscuit or muffin.

For dessert, it is almost too difficult to pick a favorite. You will find nothing closer to a slice of heaven in Atlanta than a piece of Tollhouse pie, which consists of white and dark chocolate cookie batter in an oreo-walnut crust topped with vanilla ice cream. Chocoholics can also rejoice with a piece of the chocolate peanut butter pie, the chocolate truffle layer cake or the bonzo – a tall creation which contains a layer each of fudge brownie, cheesecake, dark chocolate mousse, whipped cream and chocolate sauce. The sour cream apple pie and the New York style cheesecake are also worthy choices.

OVERALL RATING: ****
Brunch and dessert are by far the most outstanding reasons to visit. Prices are reasonable. Beware of a possible long wait for brunch on the weekends.
