Menu ****1/2
The menu is separated into three tiers of small plates at $5, $9, and $11, as well as pizzas for $7, entrees for $17, and desserts for $5. The neatly organized presentation of food choices makes it fun to assemble a meal. Instead of the same old tapas, M!x presents a refreshing take on the concept with inventive combinations and lots of Mediteranean flavors.

Food Quality ****
You can’t fake freshness when it comes to raw fish. The bluefin tuna at M!x is a shining example of the chef’s eye for quality. Presented in three pristine cubes, it puts most sushi restaurants to shame. The hamachi sashimi roll is equally fresh and bursting with yellowtail and crab, topped with a twist of avocado. From the lump crab in the potato leek soup to the kobe beef carpaccio, fine ingredients are the standard here.

Food Presentation ****
Again, the bluefin tuna sets an impeccable example. Three bright blocks of tuna are decorated with light and dark sesame seeds and neatly displayed on a rectangular white plate. The potato leek bisque is also picturesque in a miniature white cup with a tiny pool of paprika oil floating on the surface, hinting at the vivid flavors below.

Atmosphere ****1/2
M!x is set in a relaxing, artistic space designed to accommodate mingling singles alongside more serious foodies. An expansive, curvy bar circles around to the open kitchen where, thankfully, the activity piques your curiosity without adding deafening noise. Everything from the red pendant lighting to the plentiful number of booths encourages comfort while providing an element of entertainment. For example, in addition to eye-catching artwork, the bathrooms at M!x are an event unto themselves. Transparent glass doors fog up and turn opaque when locked from inside and a previously invisible sign lights up with the word “occupied.”

Cleanliness *****
M!x glows with the sheen of newness and stays that way at the hands of a conscientious staff.

Service ****
Our waiter couldn’t remember what the veal sweetbreads on the menu actually are but he was earnest in his attempt and the chef happily visited our table to answer all of our questions.

Menu recommendations:
The potato leek bisque is a good idea if you’re in the mood for a rich, creamy soup with generous lumps of crabmeat The bluefin tuna is an excellent sushi option, with just a hint of soy sauce and sesame to heighten the fresh tuna taste, and a dollop of creamy lime dressing for garnish. My absolute favorite is an entrée special of pan roasted haddock in miso broth. (Cross your fingers that it finds a permanent place on the menu.) For dessert, the chocolate souffle is divine but the sweet nutella pizza is more inventive and equally delicious. The fragile crust is spread with nutella, sprinkled with crumbles of sheep’s milk ricotta cheese, and dusted with finely chopped hazelnuts.

Overall rating ****1/2
M!x combines excellent food with reasonable prices and adds the bonus of an intriguing atmosphere, placing itself high on my list. Along with some of Atlanta’s best small plates, I found an energetic chef who loves his job and an environment the breeds the same level of excitement.
