MidCity Cuisine (upscale casual) ****1/2
1545 Peachtree Street
Midtown
(404) 888-8700.

A young, talented chef has fashioned a very appealing, affordable menu of classic favorites (with a few twists) in groovy new digs in a Midtown high-rise. Great-looking crowd follows. So should you.

MENU: ****
There are sixteen hors d’oeuvres on the menu and hopscotching through them makes for a fulfilling meal, even if you don’t opt for an entree. There’s also an all-you-can-eat gourmet slad and pizza night that’s become the best meal in town, on Sundays, for $10. And the wine list is full of little-seen gems from boutique wineries throughout the Mediterranean.

FOOD QUALITY: *****
Top-notch. Fresh seafood, tender meats, impeccable vegetables.

FOOD PRESENTATION: ****
Each dish was simply, attractively presented.

ATMOSPHERE: *****
The sleek, yet warm space was designed by The Johnson Studio and features high ceilings and snappy, earthtone colors of terracotta, rust and dark gray in the upholstery and leather banquettes. Dark wood floors and tables play against the white ceiling fans, ceiling and walls, with a bank of windows fronting Peachtree Street adding even more light. There’s also al fresco dining.

CLEANLINESS: *****
Spanking clean, from the exhibition kitchen to the hardwood floors to the spiffy restrooms.

SERVICE: ****
Mostly solid, intelligent service from a good looking staff.

MENU RECOMMENDATIONS: Chef/owner Shaun Doty selects ultra fresh, organic chicken livers, sautés them to a firm texture and pairs them with buttery ribbons of fettuccine—for a mere $10. Simple, rich and rustic, it’s everything you want in a pasta dish. I am absolutely crazy about the bright green fava beans and pecorino cheese and the bread salad with salty Serrano ham, but my unabashed favorite is the Sardinian flatbread, a thin and crispy round topped with peppery arugula and Moroccan oil. There’s also a very good hangar steak with perfectly done frites and the turbot fillet glistens with a delicious caper and brown butter sauce. The doughnut holes with three sauces (white chocolate, chocolate and caramel) are giant cream filled, fried balls of joy that will have you smiling. Ditto the homemade Kit Kat bar, a silky nougat finale. There’s also a great kid’s menu including PB&J panini, spaghetti, chicken fingers and natural beef hot dogs. (Doty recently had his first child).

OVERALL RATING: ****1/2
Hooray for the gifted Mr. Doty who has succeeded in bringing us stylish bistro dining of a high quality with a low price tag. This is my new favorite neighborhood eatery.
