Menu ****

The menu is extensive, especially for a pub. In addition to traditional Irish fare, the menu includes sections for soup and salad, and sandwiches. Each location also offers its own “Above the Pub” selections, which venture from the Irish theme and add more upscale variety. Many of the dishes are heavier, such as the fish and chips, corned beef and cabbage, and two-fisted roast beef sandwich. Keeping the lighter side in mind, the restaurant also serves less-filling options, such as pan roasted halibut, cider cured grilled salmon Caesar salad and Irish quesadillas.

Quality ****

From the side dishes and sauces to the main dishes, everything tastes fresh. Rather than squeezing the tartar sauce out of a bottle, for instance, someone’s in the back making it. You can tell that the food is moved from the fryer, oven or skillet to your table within a couple of minutes.

Presentation *** _

The presentation of the food fits in with the atmosphere of a pub. The food is arranged in a simple, practical manner that is appealing at the same time. The potato chips, for example, are served in a brown paper lunch bag. Each dish also is comprised of a nice variety of color.

Service ****

The servers here contribute to the warm, relaxing ambience. They are friendly, prompt, knowledgeable and very willing to make suggestions. They make you feel as if you are having dinner at a friend’s house.

Cleanliness ****

No sticky floors here. Everything from the bathrooms and bar to the floors and tables are tidy.

Recommendations

Whether or not you’re in the mood for a starter, the salt and vinegar potato chips are a must. Made in-house, they actually taste like fresh fried potatoes. You can’t go wrong with the restaurant’s two most popular main dishes: the fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie. The fish is lightly breaded (not too heavy) and is complemented by hot “chips,” cole slaw and homemade tartar sauce. Perfect on a cold day, the shepherd’s pie will (as grandma says) stick to your ribs. The ground beef, English peas, carrots and gravy blend together well and are topped off with a fluffy layer of slightly browned mashed potatoes. Make sure you leave room for the Soho’s chocolate bread pudding. A departure from traditional bread pudding, it tastes like a hot, very gooey brownie, and is accompanied by caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. Despite the richness, you’ll be tempted to order two.

Atmosphere ****

With abundant dark wood, warm earthy colors, high-backed booths and low lighting, the atmosphere is inviting and relaxing. The long bar at the entrance and covered outdoor patio add to the convivial feel. You will likely find most patrons leaning back in their seats while chatting and drinking a couple of beers.

Overall ****

Influenced by Irish neighborhoods in New York, Meehan’s balances the charm of a pub with inspired food (some of the recipes come from an owner’s grandmother). Whether you are coming in for a drink, a satisfying meal, or both, you won’t be disappointed.
