The Flying Biscuit landed on the Atlanta breakfast scene in 1993. Executive Chef Tonia Larkins serves up colorful, creative dishes for the anytime breakfast eater, with a fluffy biscuit on the side. Owner Delia Champion opened the second location in midtown in 2000.

MENU ***1/2

The menu is eclectic: Sightings of tofu, black beans and vegan dishes are standard. Breakfast choices such as the High Flyer (two large eggs with chicken and sage sausage, and an organic oatmeal pancake topped with peach compote) or Love Cakes (three black bean and cornmeal cakes, sautéed and topped with a tomatillo salsa, sour cream, feta cheese and spears of red onion) are served all day long. Lunch and dinner items, ranging from the Angel Burger to the Tofu and Tater Salad, also make an appearance. Jet-puffed, straight-from-the-oven biscuits with a side of homemade cranberry-apple butter accessorize every dish.

FOOD QUALITY ****

The omelets are fresh, and the biscuits are hot.

FOOD PRESENTATION ****

Presentation is playful: Heaping portions sit atop a rainbow of china. Sugar cubes hide in decorative pots.

ATMOSPHERE ****

The restaurants emit a casual, roll-out-of-bed sort of feeling. Bright, cheerful murals of sunflowers, clouds and hillsides simulate stepping inside a coloring book.

CLEANLINESS ***

The unfinished wood floor could handle a sweep or two, as all those biscuits seem to beget lots of crumbs.

SERVICE ***1/2

The friendly staff bustles around in jeans and bandanas. There is usually a lengthy wait on weekend mornings, but food arrives sooner than expected.

MENU RECOMMENDATIONS

Food is good, but a bit too exciting for the simple diner. Diverting from the menu, I requested an omelet my way (spinach, cheddar cheese and mushrooms) and found they were happy to accommodate a special order. For those more adventurous, the Smoked Salmon Scramble (wood-smoked salmon and dill cream cheese scrambled with three eggs) and the orange-scented French toast (topped with raspberry sauce and honey crème anglaise) are both tasty. Biscuits are worthy of the name, but the house cranberry-apple topping is the only jam available.

OVERALL RATING ***1/2

The fun, fanciful Flying Biscuit keeps the crowds happy; There’s always a smattering of patrons licking jelly off their fingers. Grab a spot in line early – or plan on reading the paper while your stomach growls.
