CHOPS ~ upscale casual ****
70 West Paces Ferry Road

For anyone visiting Atlanta, I am sure you asked about great places to eat and received rave reviews about Chops. To the locals, it is the quintessential place for Prime beef, excellent service and a fine-dining atmosphere. If you are willing to overlook a couple of mediocre dishes, you will be pleased with the overall Chops experience.

MENU: ****
The starter menu is dominated by the finest in fresh seafood, whole Maine lobster, shrimps and oysters. They even offer tableside steak tartare. Original soups and salads round out the appetizers. The core of the menu offers steaks and chops but also an abundant selection of seafood choices.

FOOD QUALITY: *****
Nothing but the best for the best. When serving up Prime beef, the quality is what sets chops apart from the standard fare at other restaurants. Chops bar none for quality.

FOOD PRESENTATION: ****
The presentation of each plate at Chops is simple chic as is the rest of the restaurant. Each steak or seafood selection is presented with little fluff. They let the food speak for itself. This is not the place to see flamboyantly decorated plates. The presentation is simple yet bold.

ATMOSPHERE: ****
The clean, simplistic decor of the restaurant is strong yet appealing. With an open kitchen, you are invited to see the chefs in action. The bar area is accented with mahogany and touches of ebony. It is the classic example of masculine decor. Luckily it is warm and inviting enough to appeal to the ladies.

CLEANLINESS: *****
When choosing to eat in a fine-dining atmosphere, you expect exceptionally clean surroundings. Chops delivers without fault. You would need the keen eye of a certified health inspector to determine any indiscretions. Even then you may come up empty handed.

SERVICE: *****
You would be hard pressed to find any service faux pas when visiting Chops. As with most upscale restaurants, they know each guest is expecting to be “wined and dined.” Chops is no exception, and they deliver as promised. Guests will not leave disappointed.

MENU RECOMMENDATIONS:
The select oysters, jumbo shrimp cocktail and chilled whole Maine lobster are all worthy of praise. To taste a little of everything, try the iced seafood tower. Other appetizers include the oysters Rockefeller and jumbo lump crab cake. The spinach salad with button mushrooms is excellent, served with roasted pecans and a delicious warm bacon dressing.

If you decide to try the famous beef served at Chops, your choices include Prime filet, New York strip, New York strip au poivre or a bone-in Ribeye. The famed fresh lobster is some of the best you will find in Atlanta. The large Dover sole or the seafood daily special are sure to please. The Surf & Turf is also recommended -- a half pound Prime filet over a quarter pound batter-fried lobster tail.

The dessert selection is excellent. Indulge in white chocolate creme brulee, Italian rum raisin bread pudding or the famous Chicago cheesecake. The chocolate black bottom pie and chocolate toffee crunch pie are also worth trying.

OVERALL RATING: ****
Chops definitely lives up to high expectations. The presentation is not over the top but is consistent and full of class. Not everything on the menu is perfect, but then again, the joy is the journey and not the destination.
