With a gargantuan three-story fish out front, the Atlanta Fish Market is a hard spot to miss. Opened in 1981 as the Fish Market in Lenox Square, the restaurant moved to its current location on Pharr Road in 1993, and was renamed the Atlanta Fish Market. The establishment belongs to the prestigious Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, headed by Pano Karatassos.

MENU: ****
Fish. Lots of it. Atlanta Fish Market has everything – sushi, oysters, lobster, crabs, tropical and exotic fish dishes – fried, grilled or sautéed. Chicken and steak options are also offered. There are several salad choices, as well as chowder and gumbo. The wine list is lengthy.

Fresh fish is flown in three times a day. In fact, the Atlanta Fish Market owns their own seafood company.

Entrees are attractive but not elaborate and are served on simple white china. Desserts are fancier: Chocolate mousse cake arrives drizzled with white chocolate sauce, a sliced strawberry and a chocolate straw.

The ambiance is casual with a heavy under-the-sea motif. Dozens of little details carry out the theme, including mermaid wallpaper, mounted fish, porthole-shaped booth lighting, neon jellyfish ceiling lights with dangling tentacles and a seashell mosaic-tiled entranceway. Tanks of lobsters and crabs eyeball the diners.

The prominent odor of fish is to be expected. The kitchen and staff move at a fast clip, but all appears to be in order.

Service is upbeat and pleasant.

The daily catch section of the menu deserves particular attention. Choices range from Atlantic salmon to yellow fin tuna to Gulf mahi mahi, prepared one of three ways: Hong Kong style with light sherry soy sauce, stir-fry spinach and sticky rice; Meuniere, sautéed and served with brown butter, lemon, capers, creamy whipped potatoes, green beans and mushrooms; or char-broiled, served with creamy whipped potatoes, mixed vegetables, tartar sauce and lemon. The blue Caesar salad and key lime pie are also delicious.

Atlanta Fish Market offers an extremely diverse selection of seafood items and prepares them with fresh ingredients and innovative flavors. Perfect for seafood lovers.
