| Tamarind; An Atlanta Thai Treasure by Stephanie Morris Tamarind is a haven of flavor and spices waiting to invade your mouth and invigorate your senses. The humble, yet buzzing family owned restaurant, brings Thai cuisine to a new level by giving standard dishes a new twist. All of the selections offered here are bursting with freshness and the flavors of Southeast Asia. One word of warning before you embark on this journey of taste -- watch out for the chilies! Tamarind has everything from mild to spicy dishes, and makes it easy to stimulate your taste buds without sending your lips and tongue into overdrive. Dishes on the menu are marked with one to four chili symbols to indicate just how hot the flavors are. I started out my journey by selecting an appetizer of steamed fresh basil rolls. The basil rolls were crisp and freshly made, and served with a delectable Tamarind sauce. The next appetizer I sampled was the spicy fish cakes. The round, crispy patties were delicious and were served with a cucumber salad. I then moved on to try one of Tamarinds traditional salads. A seafood salad arrived that was made up of shrimp, scallops and squid marinated in a lemon juice, lemon grass and kiffir lime leaves. The seafood was fresh and the flavors were distinctive. Then two of the main dishes got their chance, the duck and the sea bass. The sea bass was served in a pool of a spicy three-chili sauce with a pile of sautéed spinach on the side. The duck was in a peanut curry sauce with cashews and avocados served with rice. Both were delicious, bursting with their own brand of spice and flavor. Dessert is a must to finish off the meal. Tamarinds specialty is the fried bananas served with sticky rice and a scoop of lemon ice cream. While rice in a dessert may seem a little out of the ordinary, I recommend that you surprise your taste buds with a new twist on an old classic. Many other dishes are offered, including soups, Thai noodles, fried rice, and vegetable selections. Entrees are offered consisting of chicken, beef, pork, vegetables, seafood, duck, and lamb, all served up a different way, either alone or in combinations. Dont forget to accompany your meal with a sampling of Thai beer to wash down all those chilies. Tamarind is spacious inside, with a cut out window opening to up the magic and mystery of the kitchen to its patrons. The servers are pleasant and accommodating, helping you decide what youd like best on the menu. No empty dish sits on the table past its time; they are urgently cleared as your server brings over the next course. Tamarind has an atmosphere thats able to adapt to your dining needs. It is appropriate for a business dinner, a night out with friends, or even a first date. There is also a patio out front for those of you who prefer to dine outside on those warm Atlanta nights. Whether you are new to Thai cuisine or you know the traditional dishes by heart, Tamarind will surprise you with dishes that are vibrant and flavors that you are sure to enjoy.
