Gregg McCarthy Executive Chef

A gifted chef who draws his inspiration from the coasts around the world, Gregg McCarthy will bring his stand-out talent to Virginia Highland’s favorite Murphy’s. McCarthy’s deft style fuses fresh local and international ingredients to create a new genre of American cuisine. To stand along side Murphy’s signature dishes, McCarthy will create a few special menu items designed exclusively for Murphy’s.

Most recently serving as the Corporate Executive Chef at Ray’s Restaurants, McCarthy headed culinary operations since 1995 at Ray’s on the River, Ray’s Killer Creek and Ray’s in the City, where his reformation of the restaurants’ menus garnered numerous awards including the Award of Excellence for nine years in a row by Wine Spectator, Most Memorable Meal in 2000 by Where Magazine, and numbering in the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Top 25 Restaurants.

After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, McCarthy worked at distinguished restaurants all over the country before settling down in Atlanta. McCarthy was the chef at The 1761 Old Mill in Westminster, Mass., and the Sous Chef at both the The Hotel Crescent Court in Dallas, Tex. and at The Old Ebbitt Grill in Washington, D.C. He also spent time in the Buckhead Life Group, working as Executive Sous Chef at The Buckhead Diner. His finely honed culinary skills have led him to prepare meals for some of the most prestigious audiences in the world like the James Beard House in New York City and the Queen of England. McCarthy’s culinary talent has been featured on PBS’s, Great Chefs Series and recognized in The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Marietta Daily Journal, and most recently Nation’s Restaurant News.

McCarthy’s extensive charitable involvement harmonizes well with Murphy’s philosophy of giving back to the community. He has worked with March of Dimes, Share Our Strength and as Chef Coach of a local high school Pro-Start Culinary team, to name just a few of the ways McCarthy translates his passion for food into ways to help others.

McCarthy and Murphy’s new relationship promises to be a fruitful one for both new and loyal guests of the restaurant. He currently resides in Atlanta with his wife Audrey and two children Matthew and Christopher.
